Why we started

Step Up Learning was started by a parent who spent years teaching math and reading at home to a child with special needs. Most materials moved too fast or looked too young. So we built our own: one small step at a time, in a clean design that respects older learners.

How it works

1. 1

   One step at a time

   Each problem is split into small steps. Students finish one step before moving to the next, so they are never asked to hold the whole problem in their head at once.

2. 2

   Find and fix mistakes

   When a step is wrong, students see exactly which step it was and fix it there, without starting the whole problem over.

3. 3

   Practice at their own pace

   Students repeat each skill until it sticks, then move on. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are covered today.

Step Up Math

Step Up Math is a web app for practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division step by step. It runs in a web browser at stepupmath.com.

Who it is for: students working on foundational skills, the parents who teach them at home, and the teachers and tutors who support them.

Step Up Reading

Step Up Reading is a web app that helps teachers track reading progress. Students read a short passage and answer questions one at a time, with large buttons and no timer. Teachers see a growth graph against the IEP goal, the kinds of mistakes each student makes, and a ready-to-copy IEP progress sentence.

It starts with Main Idea at grade levels 2 to 4. Student results stay on the teacher's own computer; nothing is sent to us.
